Peter Lilienthal is one of the most important representatives of the New German Cinema and a personality who is farthest away from the cliché of former young filmmakers. Born in Berlin 1929, Lilienthal is about 15 years older than the wartime and postwar generations who began to make films in the late 1960‘s. Because of his jewish parentage, the nine year old boy had to emigrate first to Spain and then later to Uruguay, Montevideo to be exact. Later in the 1950‘s, Peter Lilienthal returned to Europe to study (Paris and Berlin) and eventually took on a job with a freelance television director. Lilienthal is one of the few New German Film directors who did not have to learn his trade by himself. Quite the opposite. He was even a lecturer at the German Film Academy in Berlin from 1966 to 1968. Much in line with his biography, the subjects of Lilienthal’s films do not fall neatly into the normal framework of the New German Cinema as such. Only two of his cinema films were "made in Germany", all the others were made in Latin America and the US. Nevertheless, Peter Lilienthal is a very German director and a typical author / filmmaker into the bargain in that he is continually reviews and reflects the traumatic situations during his childhood and the political background of his origins in up-to-date and critical events.
