Hollywood Profile - Kirk Douglas

The great actor Kirk Douglas has embodied so many heroic characters – from Spartacus to van Gogh. He became unforgettable with films like Young Man With A Horn and Gunfight At the O.K. Coral. But he has rarely played a role so similiar to his own personality as in his film Diamonds: It is that of the eternal seeker who finally rediscovers his Jewish and proletarian roots in the autumn of his life, after a helicopter accident and a stroke which almost deprived him of the ability to speak. We watch him during the shooting in Reno with Lauren Bacall and we also go back to his roots and visit his birthplace in Amsterdam – a small town in the state of New York.

"I made so many movies, sometimes three or four a year, so I didn't have the time to sit down and think about myself. But I think it's very important for everybody to take inventory of themselves, to get to know themselves, to find out that you like yourself".
